This issue belongs to the Royal Mint's ongoing bullion and proof programme that accelerated sharply after the 2008 financial crisis, when demand for silver proof coinage from British collectors outpaced earlier projections. The fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced in 2015 — the first monarch's effigy to be selected entirely through an internal Royal Mint process rather than a formal advisory committee review, breaking from the procedure that had governed portrait changes since decimalisation.
The Royal Shield reverse, originally designed by Matthew Dent for the 2008 circulating series, presents the shield from the Royal Arms in full — a composition that only reads completely when all eight denominations are assembled together.
