Reverse description The lower portion of the Royal Shield of Arms, as designed by Matthew Dent, occupying the full field of the coin in a bold, graphic treatment that divides the shield across the coinage series. The lower-left quarter displays the golden harp of Ireland against an azure field, while the lower-right quarters show the passant guardant lions of England and the rampant lion of Scotland rendered in high relief against a finely tooled background. A beaded inner border frames the design, and the denomination FIFTY PENCE appears prominently in raised lettering within a plain lower segment beneath the shield. The engraver's initials MD are visible in the field to the lower right.
