Flanking the central figure in the uncoloured field are engraved depictions of Cretaceous-era flora, including fern fronds and a cycad cone with roots, rendered in fine intaglio. The legend IGUANODON curves along the upper arc of the coin, while MANTELL 1825 is inscribed in two lines across the lower exergue, commemorating the palaeontologist and the year of the genus's scientific naming. |

Issued as part of the Royal Mint's "Dinosaur Britain" series, this coin marks the 200th anniversary of the formal scientific description of Iguanodon by Gideon Mantell in 1822 — though the creature had been misidentified for decades, famously reconstructed with its thumb spike placed on its nose. The error persisted in public models until well into the twentieth century.
