HMS Dido was a Dido-class light cruiser, not a battleship — a distinction the Isle of Man's issuing authority apparently chose to overlook. The ship earned considerable distinction during the Second World War, serving at the Battle of Cape Matapan and the evacuation of Crete before taking a German bomb to the bow in 1941. She was repaired at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York, an early indicator of just how stretched British repair facilities had become by mid-war.
The Isle of Man has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces prolifically since the 1970s, and the Pobjoy Mint — long the island's primary striking partner — produced many of these themed naval issues for the collector market rather than general circulation.
