Reverse description Three RAF airmen in full flying kit are depicted from behind in dynamic stride, scrambling urgently across an airfield toward their waiting Supermarine Spitfire fighters, whose silhouettes flank the lower field. Above, a large formation of enemy aircraft fills the upper portion of the design in a powerful aerial tableau evoking the summer of 1940. The bold incuse legend THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN occupies the centre of the field, with the commemorative date 1940 in the exergue. The engraver's initials GB appear to the lower right of the design.
