The 50p denomination itself was introduced across the British Isles in October 1969, replacing the ten-shilling note as part of the preparatory groundwork for decimalisation — which wouldn't complete until February 1971. Guernsey, as a Crown dependency, followed its own commemorative program largely independent of the Royal Mint, issuing distinctive local coinage while remaining tied to sterling.
