Issued to mark the London 2012 Olympics, this piece is one of 29 different 50 pence reverses commissioned for the Games — the largest themed coin series in British history. The individual sport designs were selected partly through a public competition, with the sailing design attributed to the programme's broader design initiative rather than a single named artist.
Mintage figures varied dramatically across the 29 sports issues, making certain pieces in the set genuinely scarce in circulation.
