The Royal Shield 50p was part of a jigsaw-puzzle design concept by Matthew Dent, selected through a public competition in 2005 — the first open redesign of British circulating coinage in decades. Each denomination from 1p through 50p carries a segment of the Royal Arms, which only assembles into a complete shield when the coins are arranged together. The £1 of the same series shows the shield complete and unbroken.
Dent was 26 years old and a recent graphic design graduate when his entry won.
