One of 29 sport-specific designs commissioned for the London 2012 Olympic Games, this piece was released into general circulation beginning in 2011 — an unusually ambitious program that made the humble 50p the primary vehicle for public engagement with the Games. The Royal Mint released the full set across two years, and the uneven distribution through circulation created immediate informal scarcity for certain sports. Gymnastics proved one of the harder pieces to pull from change.
