| Reverse description | The reverse commemorates Roger Bannister's historic sub-four-minute mile run of 6 May 1954, the fiftieth anniversary of which this coin celebrates. The central design, sculpted by James Butler, depicts the lower legs and feet of a running athlete in dynamic motion, conveying speed and athletic effort. Behind the runner, a stylised circular stopwatch occupies the field, its hands frozen at a symbolic moment. The denomination '50 PENCE' appears in the lower portion of the reverse, set against the clean heptagonal format of the coin. |
