The "Equestrian" 50p was issued to mark the London 2012 Olympic Games, part of a 29-coin sports series that became the largest and most ambitious commemorative programme the Royal Mint had ever undertaken for a single event. Public demand was extreme enough that the Royal Mint sold out individual designs within hours of release, and secondary market premiums on certain low-mintage sports pieces ran well beyond face value almost immediately.
The football design from the same series was briefly recalled after a rules dispute over goalkeeper positioning — the only withdrawal of an Olympic 50p from circulation.
