Reverse description The reverse, designed by sculptor David Wynne to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the United Kingdom's accession to the European Economic Community, features nine pairs of hands arranged in a continuous circular formation, each pair clasping the wrists of the next in a motif symbolising unity and cooperation among member nations. The composition is bold and sculptural, filling the heptagonal field with fluid, interlocking relief. At the centre of the ring of hands, the denomination numeral 50 appears in large characters, with PENCE inscribed below it and the year 1973 — the year of British EEC entry — placed above.
