Reverse description The seated allegorical figure of Britannia occupies the central field, depicted in three-quarter view facing left, helmeted and draped in classical robes. She holds a trident upright in her left hand and extends an olive branch in her right, symbolising naval power and peace respectively. A large round shield rests against her left side, and a crouching lion is positioned to her right. The denomination numeral 50 appears in the exergue below the figure, while the curved legend FIFTY PENCE arcs across the upper field. The design was engraved by Christopher Ironside.
