| Obverse description | The fourth definitive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II faces right, depicted crowned and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, as rendered by engraver Ian Rank-Broadley. The truncated, draped bust is set within the coin's field with the engraver's initials IRB appearing below. Issued as part of the 2012 London Olympics series, this piece was withdrawn from circulation shortly after release when Paralympic swimmers complained that the wave design obscured the swimmer's face, making it difficult to distinguish from a non-disabled athlete. The Royal Mint — under considerable public pressure — agreed to modify the design, making this first issue one of the shortest-lived circulating commemoratives in modern British coinage history.
