Gibraltar's 50 pence program has been one of the more prolific commemorative series in British territorial coinage, running seasonal and themed issues since the early 1990s. The Christmas issues in particular have accumulated into a substantial collector run, making individual pieces more meaningful as part of a complete set than as standalone items.
The .925 silver version was struck alongside a base-metal circulation issue — a standard arrangement for Gibraltar's commemorative output, where the Royal Mint and outside contractors have both filled production contracts at various points in the series' history.
