The woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) roamed Britain until roughly 35,000 years ago, and its remains have turned up in gravel pits and river dredgings across England for centuries — most famously a near-complete specimen recovered from Pleistocene deposits in Wheatley, Oxfordshire. This coin is part of the Royal Mint's ongoing "Ancient Britain" series, which began drawing on Ice Age megafauna as subject matter in the early 2020s. Copper-nickel circulation strikes in the series have consistently shown higher collector demand than mintage figures alone would predict, largely because many go straight into sets rather than circulation.
