Alderney has issued Churchill commemoratives with unusual frequency since the 1990s, largely because the Bailiwick's semi-autonomous status allows it to produce legal tender coinage through the Royal Mint without competing with UK domestic circulation issues. Churchill's connection to the Channel Islands is grimly specific: he made the decision in June 1940 not to defend them, demilitarizing the islands to avoid casualties in a battle he considered unwinnable. They became the only British territory occupied by Nazi Germany for the duration of the war.
