Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in June 1948, this piedfort was produced during an extended period of political sensitivity around the Windrush scandal — the revelation that the Home Office had wrongly detained, deported, and denied rights to hundreds of Commonwealth citizens who had arrived legally in Britain during the postwar decades. The Royal Mint's decision to issue a commemorative in this climate was itself a statement, however carefully worded officially.
Piedforts at twice the standard planchet thickness have been a Royal Mint collector format since the 1980s revival of the French medieval practice.
