Additional information

Ascension Island has no organic connection to the Normandy landings — it sits in the South Atlantic, roughly equidistant between Africa and Brazil. Its authority to issue commemorative coinage derives entirely from its administrative status under the Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha territory, a relationship that exists for philatelic and numismatic revenue purposes rather than any historical tie to the subject matter. Utah Beach was the westernmost of the five Allied landing zones on June 6, 1944, and saw the lowest casualty rate of any sector that day — fewer than 200 killed among roughly 23,000 troops landed.
