The Isle of Man has long exploited its crown dependency status to issue commemorative coinage outside the constraints of Royal Mint licensing, making it a prolific source of collector-targeted pieces with no meaningful circulation history. This issue marks the centenary of Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of KV62 in the Valley of the Kings — a find so disruptive to Egyptology that it effectively reoriented the entire discipline toward tomb-intact assemblages rather than individual artifact recovery.
Carter's team spent a full decade cataloguing the tomb's contents before the Egyptian government assumed full control of the site in 1932.
