The Wombles — created by Elisabeth Beresford after she misheard her daughter mispronouncing "Wimbledon Common" on a Boxing Day walk in 1968 — became one of the BBC's most enduring animated properties through the 1970s series, with their central premise of collecting and repurposing human litter giving them an unlikely afterlife as environmental mascots. Wellington, the bookish, spectacle-wearing member of the group, was named after the Duke's famous boots.
