Alderney holds a specific claim on Spitfire history that most commemorative issuers lack: the island lies directly beneath what was one of the most contested stretches of airspace during the Battle of Britain, and German forces occupied it from 1940 until liberation in May 1945. A British territory issuing Spitfire coinage carries more local resonance here than it would from almost anywhere else in the Crown Dependencies.
