Guernsey has long used its crown dependency status to issue commemorative and thematic coinage outside the constraints of Royal Mint policy, and the Royal Mews series is a direct product of that freedom. The Windsor Greys — the grey horses stabled at the Royal Mews and used to draw state carriages — have served the British royal household since at least the reign of George III, who preferred grey horses for ceremonial use and established the tradition that persists today.
The horses are managed by the Crown Equerry, a position dating to 1854.
