The Red Arrows display team was formed in 1965 under RAF Fairford, inheriting the role from the Yellowjacks of 4 FTS. Gorey Castle — more properly Mont Orgueil — has dominated the eastern approach to Jersey since the early 13th century, built in direct response to the French recapture of Normandy and the sudden exposure of the island to mainland threat. Pairing the two is a distinctly Jersey conceit: the RAF connection runs through the island's wartime occupation history, during which the castle served German forces as a lookout post from 1940 to 1945.
