Issued to mark the 85th anniversary of the wartime evacuation of Guernsey's children, which began on 19 June 1940 — just days before German forces occupied the island. Nearly 5,000 children were transported to mainland Britain, many never having left Guernsey before, separated from parents who chose to remain. The evacuation was organised with little notice; some families had under 24 hours to decide whether to send their children away.
Guernsey remained under German occupation until 9 May 1945, meaning some evacuated children were separated from their families for nearly five years.
