Issued within weeks of Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this was part of the Royal Mint's rapid commemorative response to the accession of Charles III — one of the most logistically compressed coinage transitions in modern British history. New obverse dies bearing the king's effigy had to be prepared and approved while the mint was simultaneously fielding unprecedented public demand for memorial pieces bearing his mother's likeness.
The .925 silver proof version was struck in limited numbers for collectors, distinct from the base metal circulation issue. Coins bearing both the new monarch's obverse and a reverse commemorating the preceding reign are historically unusual — this piece effectively documents the succession on a single object.
