Scelidosaurus harrisonii was first described by Richard Owen in 1861 from Charmouth, Dorset — making it one of the earliest dinosaurs formally named in Britain and, more significantly, one of the most complete early Jurassic dinosaur skeletons ever recovered. The Isle of Man has no geological connection to Jurassic fossil beds; this is a licensing issue, with the island's mint acting as a prolific vehicle for Royal Mint-adjacent commemorative programs targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
