The Gruffalo's Child, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's 2004 sequel to their 1999 original, was added to the Royal Mint's ongoing children's literature 50p program following the success of earlier Gruffalo issues. The series began in 2019 and has become one of the more aggressively collected modern circulation programs in the UK, driving secondary market premiums well above face value on certain releases — a dynamic the Mint has leaned into with tiered mintage runs and collector packaging.
This 2024 issue marks the first to carry the new Charles III effigy on the children's literature series.
