The giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus) survived in Britain until roughly 7,700 years ago, with some of the best-preserved skeletal remains recovered from Irish lake sediments and Scottish peat bogs. This coin is part of the Royal Mint's ongoing "Ancient Britain" series, which has used the 50p format to highlight prehistoric fauna since the programme's expansion in the early 2020s. The Irish National Museum in Dublin holds perhaps the most complete assemblage of Megaloceros antlers ever catalogued — individual spans routinely exceeding three metres.
