The 80th anniversary of VE Day falls in 2025, and the Royal Mint has made commemorative issues for this series a fixture since the 50th. Gold Proof 50p pieces occupy an awkward commercial niche — priced well above face value yet below the flagship sovereign or Britannia lines — and exist almost entirely for the collector market rather than any genuine monetary function.
At 15.5g in 22-carat gold, this piece uses the same planchet specification as the double sovereign.
