The Isle of Man has issued commemorative fifty pence pieces since the 1970s with a frequency and variety that puts most sovereign mints to shame — the Treasury has never been shy about crowding the collector market. This 2024 piece marks the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious invasion in military history, which on 6 June 1944 put roughly 156,000 Allied troops ashore across five Normandy beaches in a single day, at a cost of somewhere between 4,000 and 9,000 Allied casualties by most serious estimates.
The selective gilding technique — 24-carat gold applied over .925 silver — became a fixture of the premium commemorative market in the 1990s and has remained a reliable upsell tier ever since.
