| Additional information |
The Isle of Man has issued commemorative 50 pence pieces with unusual frequency since the 1970s, and its treasury has long operated with greater latitude than most Crown Dependencies when it comes to topical subjects. This piece marks the 80th anniversary of the June 1944 landings, in which roughly 156,000 Allied troops crossed the Channel in the largest seaborne invasion in history — a figure that still strains comprehension.
The Isle of Man itself had no direct military role in Operation Overlord, though the island served during the war as an internment site for enemy aliens under Defence Regulation 18B.
