The D-Day naval bombardment on 6 June 1944 was the largest coordinated naval gunfire support operation in history — over 130 Allied warships opened fire on German coastal defenses along a 50-mile front beginning at 05:50, expending tens of thousands of rounds in the hours before the first landing craft touched the beaches.
