The D-Day naval bombardment on 6 June 1944 was the largest coordinated naval gunfire support operation in history — over 130 Allied warships opened fire on German coastal defenses along a 50-mile front beginning at 05:50, expending tens of thousands of rounds in the hours before the first landing craft touched the beaches. The Isle of Man Treasury has issued commemorative coinage for major WWII anniversaries consistently since the 1990s, this piece marking the 80th anniversary of the landings.
