The Isle of Man has issued commemorative coinage under royal cipher for decades, leveraging its Crown Dependency status to produce pieces outside the Royal Mint's remit. This 2024 issue marks the eightieth anniversary of Operation Overlord's naval bombardment — the largest coordinated naval gunfire support mission in history, involving over 1,200 warships laying down suppressive fire across five landing zones from shortly before dawn on 6 June 1944.
The shelling component is frequently overshadowed by the airborne and amphibious narratives, despite its tactical necessity in neutralizing German coastal batteries at Pointe du Hoc and elsewhere along the Norman coast.
