The Horsa was a British-designed assault glider used extensively on the night of 5–6 June 1944, carrying troops of the 6th Airborne Division into Normandy. Operation Tonga and the assault on Pegasus Bridge relied almost entirely on Horsa gliders — the bridge seizure, completed in under 15 minutes, remains the first Allied ground action of D-Day.
Eighty years on, the Isle of Man has issued commemoratives for the anniversary in a consistent pattern of gold-plated cupro-nickel, a format it has leaned on heavily since at least the 2010s for accessible collector pieces.
