The D-Day commemorative series has become a crowded space in modern British and Crown Dependency minting, but the Beach Piper occupies a specific historical niche: Scottish and Irish pipers who played on the Normandy beaches on 6 June 1944, most famously Bill Millin, who piped along the shoreline at Sword Beach under direct fire at the request of Lord Lovat. Millin later recalled that captured German soldiers said they held their fire because they assumed he was mad.
The Isle of Man issues these series under its own numismatic program independently of the Royal Mint, with the Pobjoy Mint historically handling production for such commemoratives.
