The D-Day piper subject references the famous story of Bill Millin, the young Scottish piper who played on Sword Beach on 6 June 1944 under direct orders from Lord Lovat, in defiance of British Army regulations prohibiting pipers in combat.
Captured German soldiers later told interrogators they hadn't shot him because they assumed he had gone mad.
