Issued to coincide with the coronation of Charles III on 6 May 2023, this piece is one of several Guernsey commemoratives tied to the regalia displayed during the Westminster Abbey ceremony. The Sovereign's Orb itself dates to the coronation of Charles II in 1661 — it was made specifically for that occasion, as the medieval regalia had been melted down or sold off under the Commonwealth after 1649.
Guernsey has no constitutional obligation to issue coronation coinage, but has done so as a matter of commercial tradition since Elizabeth II's accession.
