| 裏面の説明 | The Coronation Spoon, the oldest surviving piece of the English royal regalia and used to anoint the sovereign with holy oil, is depicted in the upper portion of the field, its ornate bowl and decorative handle rendered in fine detail. Behind the spoon, a stylised decorative background of radiating arcs and geometric motifs fills the upper field, evoking the splendour of the coronation ceremony. The lower portion of the reverse bears the inscription THE ANCIENT CORONATION SPOON in mixed-case lettering across two lines, flanked by fleur-de-lis ornaments, with the denomination 50p below. The overall composition by engraver Quentin Peacock frames the historic artefact as the centrepiece of the design. |

The Coronation Spoon is the oldest surviving object in the Crown Jewels, credibly dated to the 12th century and almost certainly used at the coronation of King John in 1199. It is the only piece of medieval regalia to have survived the Commonwealth period intact — Oliver Cromwell ordered the destruction and melting of the Crown Jewels in 1649, and most were sold off or smelted. The Spoon survived because it was sold as a curiosity for sixteen shillings to a royal household servant, who later returned it at the Restoration.
