The Falkland Islands has issued annual Christmas 50 pence pieces since the 1990s, a series that doubles as a showcase of the archipelago's wildlife. King penguins are native to the islands in significant numbers — the colony at Volunteer Point is among the largest accessible king penguin breeding grounds in the world — so this is not decorative fauna borrowed for appeal, but a species with a genuine and documented presence on Falklands soil.
Charles III coinage for the Falklands began appearing in 2023 following the accession, with the effigy by Martin Jennings replacing the longstanding Jody Clark portrait used for Elizabeth II issues.
