Jersey has issued commemorative 50p pieces under Royal Mint-style licensing arrangements for decades, often preceding or paralleling UK Treasury releases on the same themes. This particular piece marks the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, with the "Battle over Kent" designation referencing the summer and autumn of 1940 air campaign — Kent's proximity to occupied France made it the primary corridor for Luftwaffe incursions, and its residents became involuntary witnesses to the largest aerial engagement in history.
No fighter group flew more sorties during that period than 11 Group, whose sector stations at Biggin Hill and Hawkinge sat squarely in Kent.
