Pitcairn Islands coinage is legal tender in name only — the island's roughly 40 remaining inhabitants use New Zealand dollars in daily life, and coins issued under Pitcairn's authority are produced exclusively for the collector market. This piece honors RAF 617 Squadron, the "Dambusters," formed in March 1943 specifically to carry out Operation Chastise, the bouncing-bomb raid on the Ruhr dams designed by Barnes Wallis and executed on the night of 16–17 May 1943. Of the 19 Lancasters dispatched, eight did not return.
