Additional information

Gibraltar was seized by an Anglo-Dutch force on 4 August 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession, and has remained under British sovereignty ever since — a fact Spain has contested without interruption for over three centuries. The Rock's status remains one of the longest-running territorial disputes in European history, with Gibraltar voting 99% in favor of remaining British in the 1967 referendum and 96% against shared sovereignty in 2002.

Gibraltar issues its own coinage under Crown authority, a privilege that allows commemoratives of this kind to be struck independently of the Royal Mint.
