Obverse description Uncrowned effigy of King Charles III facing left, modelled by Martin Jennings, depicted in high relief against a finely engine-turned guilloche field. The portrait presents the King in a naturalistic, contemporary style without crown or regalia. The circular Latin legend reads CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE, interrupted at intervals by raised separating dots, with the engraver's initials MJ appearing below the truncation.

Additional information

The Royal Mint began issuing Charles III coinage in earnest following the September 2022 accession, with the new effigy by Martin Jennings — the first portrait of a British monarch sculpted by a woman — replacing the familiar Rank-Broadley profile of Elizabeth II that had appeared on British coinage since 1998. Unlike the traditional alternation of facing directions between successive monarchs, Charles faces left, the same direction as his mother, a break with a convention that had held since the reign of Charles II.
