Bradbury Wilkinson printed this series for Banco Nacional Ultramarino during an acutely uncertain moment in Macau's administrative status — Portugal's Carnation Revolution in 1974 had upended colonial policy, and formal negotiations over Macau's future with China were underway. BNU retained its note-issuing monopoly for the territory throughout this period, a privilege it had held since 1902.
The 1976 issue was among the last designed before the series was substantially revised in the 1980s. Bradbury Wilkinson's New Malden facility was well established as a producer for Portuguese overseas territories, having printed earlier BNU Macau issues.
