| Description de l’avers | The Indian State Emblem — the Lion Capital of Ashoka, depicting three lions passant guardant atop an abacus featuring the Dharma Chakra — is prominently displayed in the upper central field. The denomination numeral '50' appears in large characters in the lower central field, flanked by the Devanagari legend 'पचास पैसे' to the left and 'INDIA' and 'PAISE' in Latin script to the right, arranged along the periphery. A small mint mark 'B' is present below the denomination at the bottom of the field, identifying the Mumbai Mint issue. The design is executed in a clean, modernist style characteristic of post-independence Indian coinage. |

India's 25th independence anniversary in 1972 prompted a wave of commemorative issues, this 50 Paise among them. The timing coincided with a particularly charged political moment: Bangladesh had achieved independence the previous year with direct Indian military intervention, and Indira Gandhi's government was riding unusually high domestic approval. The commemorative program was as much political as ceremonial.
KM#60 was struck at multiple Indian mints, with Bombay, Calcutta, and Hyderabad all contributing to mintage — mint marks being the primary distinguishing feature between otherwise identical pieces.
