Nepal Rastra Bank was established in 1956 to replace the defunct Nepal Bank as the sole currency-issuing authority, ending centuries of fragmented monetary administration under the Rana oligarchy. Mahendra, who had dissolved parliament and assumed direct rule in 1960, used coinage deliberately — his portrait appearing across denominations during a period when the palace was actively consolidating national identity against democratic opposition.
The shift to copper-nickel for subsidiary coinage in this period reflected IMF-backed currency rationalization efforts rather than domestic policy.
