The 50 Paisa issues of this period fall squarely within Birendra's reign, a king whose authority rested on the Panchayat system — the partyless political structure his father Mahendra had imposed in 1960. By 1990, street protests forced Birendra to abandon it entirely, restoring multiparty democracy and fundamentally altering the constitutional basis under which these coins were issued.
