The program was controversial; critics argued it exploited numismatic buyers rather than serving any domestic monetary function.
King George Tupou II, whom this piece commemorates, reigned from 1893 until his death in 1918, leaving no legitimate heirs and nearly triggering a succession crisis resolved only by the ascension of Salote Tupou III.
